Which is more scary?

a potential Dept chair who lacks vision and a big picture perspective, but who is dedicated to faculty governance and consensus-building (and so who likes to have many many meetings)

OR

a potential Dept chair who has concise vision and presents a persona of clear leadership, but who is highly (and self-admittedly) confrontational and whose vision is, in part, alienating of much of the faculty.

This is the wimpy answer, but I'd instictively pick the first option. But a vision sounds good! The question is, though, is it a good vision?
